When we talk about margined forex trading, we normally refer to transactions on the cash forex market, which is also known as the ‘spot forex market’. This is where traders buy one type of currency and sell another.
In a forex market, you agree the price at which to exchange currencies today, and not at some date in the future.
A standardised spot forex contract is for one hundred thousand of the base currency. This standardised contract is called a ‘lot’. That means that if you wanted to carry out a transaction for just one lot, unleveraged, you would need to deposit one hundred thousand pounds and receive a hundred and thirty thousand dollars.
This is why brokers provide a lot of leverage for margined spot forex transactions.
